The Capacity for Beauty and the Environment

Someone in Australia was telling me about a conversation he overheard between two workmen the other day, one was saying that he couldn't wait for nuclear power to come in to Australia in a big scale, then he said that all we needed to do was to dump the nuclear waste in the desert. His friend agreed with him, then they moved onto the subject of dingo’s, which were the pet dogs of the aborigines and are the world's most intelligent dogs. He said that if any touched his cattle he would kill them with poisoned bait.

This is just like the farmer who shot the last wild Tasmanian Tiger because it got onto his land and he felt it threatened his livestock. That animal is now extinct.

Most people are unaware that Australia has had one of the highest rates of mammalian extinction in the world in the last 150 years and the attitude of these two above is typical of many people in that country.

They clear the land of its trees for cattle or sheep, kill any native animals in the way, watch the land slowly dry up, watch the desert advance, move further with the cattle towards the coast, cut down more trees, dump nuclear waste in the desert, poison the ocean and reefs with run-off from pesticides, watch land and home prices rise as the good land becomes scarcer, but keep trying to make money almost unceasingly carving up anything in their way.
